At the start of a hand, all players receive five cards face up. The first player to get a jack becomes the dealer for that hand. Each subsequent hand has the dealer rotate to the next person on their left. This is called the button position. The dealer may cut the deck once per hand, and this is done by offering the shuffled pack to the player on the right for a cut. They must accept the cut or decline it.
The cards are then arranged in sets of two. Players can then discard one or more cards to improve their hand. The remaining cards form a community pile. There is then a round of betting that starts with the player to the left of the dealer.
The game can be fast-paced, and the players must act quickly. If a player wants to add more money to the pot, they must say “raise.” If they don’t want to raise, they can check.
