The first step to becoming a better poker player is to learn how to read your opponent’s tells. In live play this can be done by observing physical tells, but in online games it is more difficult. Nevertheless, there are still certain patterns that can be discerned from a player’s betting pattern. For example, if you notice that a player always bets on later streets, then they are likely to have a strong showdown hand.
Once the first round of betting is complete the dealer puts three cards face up on the board that anyone can use, this is called the flop. Now everyone gets another chance to bet.
To raise your bet you must place a chip into the pot that is at least equal to the previous bet. You must announce that you are raising before placing your chip in the pot, if you don’t then it will automatically be deemed as a call. This is the standard way to raise a bet in poker, but there are other ways as well.
